News and views on what matters to me: mindfulness, leadership, public relations, marketing, social media, pop culture and every now and then I will surprise you with something else.
There has been a lot of buzz on the web about the notion of personal branding. I have always believed that we live in a branded world, and through social media and social networking applications it has been easier than ever to “brand” yourself. Like actual brands, individuals can showcase what they stand for and how they would like to be seen by others. The “social media experts” and “personal branding experts” (you will see thousands of them on twitter) have various opinions on which platforms are more important and how you can maximize your internet reach.
What I have gathered from participating and observing other individuals is that the one take-away advice is consistency. If you keep a facebook, twitter, flicker, youtube, linked-in or any other tool, you should consider using the same picture. This way your online identity can be recognized amongst the different platforms. I also believe that although you should follow the same look and feel for all of them, each tool has a different purpose and truly understanding the meaning of each will help you navigate the space more successfully. Simply by understanding what the real purpose of each tool is, you are already ahead of the game, as many users are not using the tools properly .In my eyes, the people that truly enjoy social networking and what the social media world brings to us are the curious ones. By putting yourself out there, you get a chance to discover some amazing people, participate in your favorite cause, or who knows, even discover a new passion.
At the end of this, I hope you remain consistent within the platforms you are using, I hope you are not afraid to keep a “busy online schedule” and most importantly, I hope you are able to showcase your personal brand in an authentic manner. I think we live in a very exciting time; everyone is within reach, as long as you ask the right question or can contribute something insightful to the mass conversation going on.
