Should social media silence be a strategy this Thanksgiving?

Interestingly, there’s been a lot of chatter on the value of “unplugging” this holiday season and taking the time for face-to-face conversations and engagements vs. spending time on social media. I am a fan of this sentiment, but unfortunately brands would see this as opportunity lost if they went silent and encouraged their audiences to do the same. Best Buy is even launching a Vine campaign for those waiting in line during Black Friday and with many stores opening their doors on Thursday, the thought of cherishing family and one-on-one interactions with those that matter is not something brands are looking to capitalize on because frankly it isn’t the easiest thing to do.

As a big proponent of social media, I happen to be in the school of thought of less is more this holiday season. In the perfect universe brands would encourage their audiences to spend the precious time they have engaging in person, however, we’re not living in a perfect universe, so brands will be brands. I look forward to taking a tiny break from social media this Thanksgiving to spend time with family. I am interested to see which brands will be in the “less is more” category and which go on an all out blitz…I will look for this information after Thanksgiving of course 🙂
Happy Thanksgiving to you and your loved ones!
